Mohawk NY-Our Home-1951

As you can see by this photo, my father was back in the picture. He had gotten out of prison and moved back in with my mother. My mother had moved off the farm when they split up before I got Polio, and moved into town so she could get to places easier, since she depended on her sister or sister-in-laws to take her places. She had no car. She took the bus a lot and was close to the bus line in Mohawk where we lived. We lived on Church Street. I liked it there. Nice neighbors.

I had one friend across the street but when I came home her mother didn't want her to cross the street to play with me. Folks were really scared of Polio back then. I guess some thought it could still be passed from one person to the next.
